154 Supercar Fest Sale of Iconic and Classic Cars 2023 - Cars Lot 893 Williams F1 ‘Red 5’ FW14 Display Car During the 1991 season, Nigel Mansell went on to break Ayrton Senna’s contemporary record of eight Grand Prix victories in a single season by adding four more to his Williams-Renault FW14B haul, thereby becoming the first driver in Formula 1 racing history to win nine World Championship-qualifying Grand Prix races within a single season. He sealed that memorable year’s Drivers’ Championship at the Hungarian Grand Prix in mid-August, with five qualifying rounds still to run. Mansell became the first Brit to win the World title since James Hunt in 1976 and, in parallel, Williams-Renault won the 1992 Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship. The Williams-Renault FW14-B Formula 1 car, known as ‘Red 5’, was, decades later, sold at auction in July 2019 for £2,703,000 inc. premium. It’s understood that the factory produced three display models based on the FW14-B car, using factory components and sporting the ‘Red 5’ livery of Nigel Mansell’s epic world-title winning car of 1991. Of the three cars, it has been the privilege of Silverstone Auctions to have sold two. It is an honour to be asked to offer the third of the trio at our Sywell sale. Recently discovered and purchased by our vendor from a continental collection, and its provenance confirmed by him having owned the previous two display cars previously, this car is a unique trifecta for us, here at Silverstone Auctions. It’s presented to auction in superb condition, the tyres are plastic- composite replicas which are kinder to the polished surfaces of showrooms, museums and the flooring of the finest collections. Sold as seen, this display car has the provenance of factory workmanship, and weighing some 600kg, is ideal for installation as artwork to commemorate one of the most important cars in modern day Formula 1 history, piloted by the enigmatically British legend that is Nigel Mansell. Understood to be one of just three factory-built display cars, fitted with genuine FW14 panels, and finished in Nigel Mansell’s, 1991 ‘Red 5’ livery. Offered without reserve.
