153 + buyers premium of 12.5% plus VAT (15% incl VAT) on the first £300,000 of the hammer and 10% plus VAT (12% incl VAT) thereafter Lot 892 1989 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (R107) - Hardtop The Mercedes-Benz SL range from the 1980s was known as the R107 Series and was undoubtedly the ultimate, California-sunshine, top-down symbol of the era. Various engine options were offered but the most desirable was always the smaller 280, six-cylinder version (which at the end of the decade became the 300) so inevitably it was always the rarest and most sought-after. Launched in 1985, the 300SL was the ultimate incarnation of the updated R107 and was available for only four years with just 13,443 ever built, making them a rarity in right-hand drive. It was powered by a 2,962cc straight-six engine that produced 185bhp at 5,700rpm and 188lb/ft of torque at 4,400, sufficient output to endow this open-topped Mercedes with rapid acceleration and a top speed of 130mph. Offered here is a fine example from the final year of production of the R107 Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster. First registered in June 1989, the original owner would have been thrilled to collect this luxurious SL from the Mercedes-Benz dealership and enjoy the ride home before carefully stowing the hardtop in the garage, taking the hood down and then experiencing open top motoring in one of the most admired German roadsters of all time. Presented in the timeless colour combination of Signal Red with cream seats and a black hood, over the years the SL would be enjoyed by several enthusiast owners before more recently being subject to a thorough schedule of works. Within the history file are invoices outlining an extensive overhaul during 2021 with much of the works entrusted to a regarded Mercedes-Benz specialist. Works included a new Mohair hood, Wessex beige wool carpets and boot set, bumpers, various trim, complete mechanical overhaul, retrim and paintwork. We understand that this example performs as well as it looks and with all that confidence- inspiring work behind it, the new owner could set off on any journey and feel positive that their gleaming SL wouldn’t miss a beat. The car’s history file also contains a current V5C registration document ready for transfer or export, old MOT certificates, restoration paperwork, an Owners’ Handbook and various other documents. A delightful, late-production R107 that must be one of the nicest currently on the market and would make an excellent addition to any car collection or ideal for the enthusiast to enjoy frequently now that Summer is just around the corner. A simply beautiful example of the highly regarded R107 SL, presented in glorious Signal Red with cream seats and beige wool carpets.
