Flagship of the range, the i8, was first seen in concept form at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, with the production version going on sale in April 2014. A plug-in hybrid, the i8 is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine driving the rear wheels, and an electric motor located within the front axle assembly. Maximum outputs are 228bhp and 139 bhp equivalent respectively, giving the i8 simply remarkable acceleration - 0-60mph in under 4.4 seconds - and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
