Nothing can compare to witnessing first hand a rally car drifting sideways around a corner, with calamity mere inches away and only a tree or, at best, a road sign for protection. As such there has been a long held demand for rally-derived motor cars at both ends of the market with Porsche and Lancia at the top end and domestic manufacturers at the affordable end. However, it wasn’t until Subaru’s rallying successes of the 1990s that we saw a market eager to be supplied with rally-engineered sports cars with the practicality of four seats and a level of comfort for daily driver status. Whilst the engineering genius of Oxfordshire’s Prodrive was instrumental in the successes of the Impreza on gravel, it was the vision of Japan’s Subaru HQ that saw the demand of limited-edition, UK-supplied cars on tarmac. Affordable, but limited in number at release, each new introduction saw enthusiastic but different buyers putting deposits down, those who bought the car as a daily driver and those who treated the car as an exotic for occasional use alongside their Ferrari or Lamborghini. Every buyer of course imagined themselves drifting sideways through pine forests whilst in reality the practically of an Impreza WRX lent itself, regretfully, to the Friday big shop. With UK-supplied WRX Imprezas finding homes with occasional and respectful drivers who held onto them, demand led to importation of inferior cars which were subsequently modified by questionable owners. This 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type UK is an impressive example of the rally-bred performance saloon, presented smartly in classic colours. Under the bonnet is the rumbling 2.5-litre turbocharged flat-four, which produces around 276bhp and drives all four wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. It was first registered on the 23rd of March 2007 and is finished in World Rally Blue with the gold 17-inch alloy wheels matching the Brembo callipers surrounded by four good Michelin tyres. The exhaust system has been upgraded to include a Nur-specification back box. Interior comforts include the electric pack, air conditioning and the knowledgeable driver is made aware of the switchable differential controls as found in a DCCD equipped car. Most recently serviced by a Subaru main dealer, that also included a £2,000 cambelt service, the service book shows 13 stamps and the car has an advisory-free MOT history culminating in the most recent MOT valid until April 2023, carried out at 26,426 miles. It’s presented to auction with the book-pack, service book, two keys and a Swansea V5C.
