48 The Dawn of Motoring Sale 2023 - Cars Registration: BF 4349 Chassis No.: 31215 Estimate: £25,000 - £30,000 Lot 273 1913 Chalmers Model 17 37hp Five-Passenger Tourer Originally manufactured in Detroit, Michigan, the Model 17 Chalmers stands out as one of the remarkable offerings from the Chalmers Company. Founded by Hugh Chalmers, a former cash register manufacturer turned automobile pioneer in 1908, Chalmers strategically positioned itself in the middle market, avoiding direct competition with the dominant Ford empire. Renowned for its superior craftsmanship, Chalmers gained recognition as a leader in the industry, however, the company faced adversity in the early 1920s due to the post-World War I recession, ultimately leading to its acquisition by Walter Percy Chrysler. This exceptional Model 17, imported as a non-runner from America in 2005, caught the eye of discerning veteran car enthusiast and esteemed member of the VCC, Peter Young. Recognising its immense potential as a reliable and powerful touring car, Peter embarked on a meticulous mechanical restoration, ensuring the preservation of the car’s remarkable originality. The restoration work included the replacement of the fuel tank and air receiver/Kellogs compressor, a re-cored radiator, overhauled dynamo and various minor repairs all detailed within the car’s history file. In 2007, the car passed into the possession of Peter’s daughter, who has actively participated in veteran car events ever since. Notably, the car achieved consecutive first, second, and Best in Show awards at the prestigious Chertsey Agricultural Show, solidifying its reputation. Moreover, it has demonstrated its reliability during VCC events and even claimed the ‘Best Orphan’ trophy at the Classic American Auto Club of Great Britain annual rally at The Brooklands Museum in 2013. Designed for touring, the car boasts practical features such as a hood, a two-piece folding windscreen, a side-mounted spare rim and tyre, detachable-rim wooden wheels, a running board-mounted tool box, a radiator calormeter, and matching rear-view mirrors. Brass fittings adorn the vehicle throughout, whilst kerosene sidelamps and powerful electric headlamps illuminate the way. Following our vendor’s purchase in 2016, the Chalmers has been mechanically recommissioned with conserving originality at the forefront of the work. Equipped with a robust 36hp, four-cylinder engine and a 4-speed gearbox, this comfortable, long-legged five-seat, Detroit-built Edwardian, is surely an ideal companion for long-distance motor tours. With a gentle re-commissioning behind it, this little Model 17 promises to deliver a practical and enjoyable experience. Highly original and rarely seen Model 17, perfect for long-distance veteran touring. Mechanically restored but cosmetically preserved in the interests of originality.
