Classic Cars - Saturday 22nd February 2020 Race Retro Classic & Competition Car Sale 2020 136 • A beautifully presented left-hand drive 190SL originally delivered to the dry state of California • A thorough inspection and subsequent remedial works carried out by marque specialist, John Haynes in June 2019 • Complete new brake system, fuel and ignition systems renewed including correct Solex carbs • Accompanied by a desirable hard top in matching Silver Grey Metallic • Drives and performs exceedingly well reflecting recent expenditure of circa £30,000 This beautiful Silver Grey, left-hand drive manual 190SL was manufactured in 1960, and originally delivered to the dry state of California. At some point, date unknown, it returned to Europe providing further joy and pleasure to its new custodian who resided in sunny Cyprus. During late 2014, the Mercedes arrived in the UK ready for the next chapter of its life, and a thorough restoration was commissioned. The work was entrusted to Classic & Iconic Cars Ltd who were requested to conduct an appraisal of the amount of work required and instructed to complete the work which they did at significant cost. Cosmetically the body was completely stripped, prepared, and carefully repainted in the beautiful classic silver grey finish it now wears. The engine was removed and subjected to an extensive rebuild using new pistons, bearings, valves and guides, and was professionally balanced before reassembly. Whilst the engine was away, attention was focused on the brakes, suspension, and a new exhaust system and new tyres were fitted. It was also decided to fit Weber 40DCOE carburettors to provide smoother running and turn-key performance. Subsequently, once the car was reassembled, it was sent to be professionally set up on a rolling road. The car was offered by Silverstone Auctions and purchased by our vendor in May 2018 and, although initially very pleased, he felt that he wished to take it a bit further and sent it to marque specialist John Haynes to be assessed and refreshed. The brake system was completely overhauled with new wheel cylinders, shoes, pipes, hoses, fluid, cables, drums skimmed, handbrake etc. The fuel system was also overhauled – new fuel tank, correct Solex 44PHH carburettors fitted, manifold, fuel pump, air filter housing & intake tubes etc. The ignition benefitted from a new distributor, coil, HT leads, and spark plugs. The account for this work was dated June 2019 and amounted to £28,514 (copy invoice in file). The SL still looks spectacular with its gleaming Silver Grey coachwork set off by the exceptional red leather interior, and that classic SL dashboard with its cream Bakelite steering wheel but now benefits from that confidence- inspiring mechanical refresh. Viewing of the history file is recommended where copies of receipts and invoices are available displaying the full extent of work completed along with the car’s accompanying V5c and MOT Certificate.
