Classic Cars - Saturday 22nd February 2020 Race Retro Classic & Competition Car Sale 2020 124 • xNumber 11 of only 50 individually numbered 348 GT Competizione homologation specials produced • Weight reduction of some 190 kg with comprehensive use of unique carbon fibre panels • Numerous unique performance enhancements complying with homologation requirements • Scarcer than any other Ferrari homologation special, including F40, F50 and 288 GTO • Presented in excellent order having been subject to a three-year restoration programme The Ferrari 348 GTC (‘Competizione’) is the rarest modern Ferrari road model with a factory production run of 50 cars, of which only 8 were delivered in right-hand drive. Although this homologation special is the progenitor of all the subsequent lightweight V8 models (360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale), it is far more exclusive in terms of numbers and is one of the Homologation cars in the F40, F50 and 288 GTO set. Weight reduction was the key to the performance of this ultimate 348 variant. Seats are F40 type Kevlar/carbon fibre racing buckets, doors, sills, front and rear bumpers are also composite and the wheels are unique 18” split-rim Speedline items, hiding the 15-inch F40 ventilated Brembo discs and inside the interior was stripped. The upholstery was replaced by lightweight fabric and rear windows were replaced by Lexan counterparts. The total weight saving is often quoted as a remarkable 190kg over a standard 348. Complementing the improved power to weight ratio are more focused adjustable springs & dampers enabling a revised suspension set up and a rod–connected gearshift. “The 348 GT Competizione car is so much more than just a car that has gone through a weight reduction program. Driving one proved how all these incremental changes had totally moved the game on from the base 348 in terms of dynamics and performance. The 348 GT Competizione drives like an old school, full of feel, Italian supercar. It is superb.” There were no changes to the 3.4-litre V8 so the GTC has the same 320bhp power output and in terms of straight- line speed it doesn’t differ much from the regular 348. However, the engine was always the best thing about the car and in the 200kg-lighter GTC, it spins up sweetly and loves to rev with that eagerness at the top end that is so utterly addictive. The crisp, directly connected gear change is much more satisfying and adds to the enjoyment of going up and down the box. Cosmetic enhancements include the engraved, numbered- plaque steering wheel, external recessed Scuderia wing- shields and the evocative Competizione script on the engine cover. #11/50 is in excellent condition having undergone a comprehensive, three-year, engine out, glass out, photo- documented restoration. It was re-bushed, the suspension components powder-coated, fresh cam belts fitted, and most nuts, bolts, clips and fixings replaced. All the lightweight panels were retained and the original colour combination of Rosso Corsa with a black interior and red seats was retained. It has covered a total of 23,000 km (14,500 miles) since first delivery. Invoices totalling a substantial amount for this extensive restoration are in the history file alongside the photographic record and the normal ownership documents. This is a very rare Ferrari, more scarce than any other Ferrari homologation special, including the F40, F50 and 288 GTO and, additionally, its sheer agility, huge grip and intuitive steering response make the car a delight to drive. We welcome any inspection of this remarkable Competizione.
