Race Retro Competition Car Sale 2024 Cars 12 Registration: DGS 383X Chassis No.: WF0CXXGAECBR03631 Estimate: £22,000 - £27,000 Specialist: Matthew Roberts Telephone No: 07745 048819 Lot 706 1981 Ford Capri Mk III 3.0 S X-Pack The original dealer’s invoice from 20th February 1981 that accompanies this remarkable Capri reveals that it began life a Capri 3.0 S in Midnight Blue with a black interior and factory sunroof and that, with number plates, delivery charges and VAT, the Capri would have cost its first owner the grand total of £6,538.37 had this particular owner not also chosen to tick the Factory X-Pack option box, thereby adding a further £1,834.05 to the bill. The X-Pack menu was extensive and covered bodywork, trim and performance options, however the Capri’s new owner restricted himself to four Fibresports wings and a set of RS wheels and tyres. All X-Pack options were dealer-fitted and were known as ‘Factory’ to distinguish them from the many after-market kits available. Having lived a normal life doing the things that Capris do, at some point, this 3.0 S was transformed into one of the most desirable Capris we have ever seen. We understand that the work was carried out by the owner prior to our vendor, with a restoration in 2008 and a further mechanical upgrade in 2018. Previous owners were obviously diligent as the massive history file contains every single MOT. It also contains over 100 invoices and receipts for the work carried out and is available to inspect at our Documents Desk. When the engine was rebuilt, it was taken out to 3.1-litres and the spec includes a balanced crank, pistons and flywheel, big-valve stage-2 heads refurbished and skimmed, high-compression pistons, steel timing gear and a Burton A9 camshaft enhances performance without compromising idle stability. Fuelling is delivered through Ford’s original triple Weber carburettors, specifically the correct 42DCNF ones and additional upgrades include electronic ignition, a blaster coil, high-spec silicone leads, Facet fuel pump and a Janspeed manifold and stainless exhaust exhaust system. On the dyno, the engine recorded an output of over 240bhp, showcasing remarkable smoothness and tractability. The gearbox is a 5-speed from a later model, complemented by a limited-slip differential in the axle, providing efficient performance without unwanted noise. Bilstein adjustable coil-overs grace the front, while Bilsteins and single leaves adorn the rear. The braking system features big vented discs and alloy 4-pot calipers at the front, and standard with uprated shoes at the rear. Revolution RS wheels wrapped in Yokohama tires ensure excellent grip. Now finished in gleaming white with ‘S’ decals along its flanks, the Capri looks fabulous. To match the wings, it’s fitted with a Fibresports tailgate and bonnet opened with AeroCatches, Lexan composite rear and side windows and the front and rear bumpers have been replaced with genuine carbon fibre parts - much lighter but very expensive. The interior is finished to the same incredibly high standards as the rest of the car. It’s fitted with a full Safety Devices roll-cage (‘dash-dodger’ to preserve the dashboard), carbon door skins with billet aluminium furniture, supportive bucket seats, Securon full harnesses, flocked dash and an RS steering wheel. Although many of this car’s upgrades would apply to a competition car, it was built for fast, safe road use and was undoubtedly a labour of love. The driving experience is nothing short of extraordinary, with a glorious sound that aligns with expectations. You’ll surely struggle to find a comparable specification Mk III on the market right now. This is really special and we invite and encourage your close inspection of this delightful Capri. Fabulous 3.0 S fitted from new with a factory-supplied ‘X-Pack’, comprehensively upgraded to 240bhp very fast road spec yet superbly presented to a show-winning standard.
