219 + buyers premium of 12.5% plus VAT (15% incl VAT) on the first £300,000 of the hammer and 10% plus VAT (12% incl VAT) thereafter Lot 510 1990 Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4 Ford’s podium successes with the RS badged rally and touring cars of the 1970s and ‘80s led to some very special road cars that suited the young, the aspiring and the successful. At the top end was the iconic Sierra RS500, the three-door Sierra RS Cosworth took on its German contemporaries whilst the Escort RS had no equal. However, by the late-1980s, a market was emerging that wished to remain loyal to the RS badge but preferred the convenience of four-doors and as ever, Ford called it just right. The 1988 launch of the four-door Sierra Sapphire Cosworth used the existing 1,993cc Cosworth twin-cam turbo and it looked the part without being lairy, becoming a huge success. In January 1990, the facelift RS Cosworth, now with four-wheel drive, was launched. Produced for just two years, and more than capable by today’s standards, the new era of the Mondeo loomed, and some say Ford’s RS saloon heritage ended with the Sierra. Our vendor took delivery of this smartly finished Cosworth on 31st August 1990 with gloss black coachwork and a leather interior trimmed in black. Supplied by Wylies Ford of Glasgow, he informs us that it was the first RS Cosworth 4x4 sold in Scotland. In 1991, the car was used to transport a very special passenger, our vendor’s new born daughter, on her journey home from hospital. Used often in period for family trips to the south of England, the car was perfectly suited for comfortable cruising. Over the following decades our vendor’s work commitments led to periods of living abroad and, to ensure that the car was exercised locally regularly, it was registered in his brother’s name for insurance and road tax purposes. He regretfully acknowledges that the car is now ready for the next owner to enjoy. Having put the private registration on retention, the car is back on the original number, H451 WHS, and it flew through the MOT which is valid until December 2023. Receipts on file show a full respray in 2009 that was commissioned as a “proper job” having started with the intention of tidying up some stone chips. Presented to auction in a fabulous condition, recently checked over with minor service items attended to, the odometer reading was 52,605 miles at the time of cataloguing. Somewhat overshadowed by its three-door siblings with their six-figure hammer prices, the Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 is undoubtedly the smart choice in today’s market. Offered directly from its first owner and ready for the next lucky custodian .
