The 1996 WRC season brought Mitsubishi its first World Rally Championship drivers’ title, with thanks to a blisteringly quick driver named Tommi Makinen, most notoriously named ‘The Flying Finn’. The fiercely competitive Makinen borrowed the phrase “maximum attack” and used it to devastating effect. In quick succession, the Lancer Evolution VI came to be, and, in the latter-half of 1999, Mitsubishi unleashed a special edition to celebrate its favourite driver’s four consecutive WRC drivers’ titles from 1996- 1999; the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Makinen Edition (TME). The Evolution VI was already a technological tour de force, but the TME came equipped with a more responsive titanium turbocharger, uprated and lowered suspension, quicker steering, an upgraded exhaust, a new ECU, beefed-up transfer case internals, a redesigned front bumper for improved cooling and authentic 17-inch WRC Enkei alloy wheels. Interior wise the TME featured embossed Recaro seats, a MOMO steering wheel and red stitching. The performance upgrades saw the 0-60mph sprint obliterated in 4.4 seconds and a maximum top speed of 150mph. Power was rumoured to be north of 300bhp, rather than the 276bhp ‘Gentleman’s agreement’. Widely regarded as the finest Lancer to wear the Evolution badge, it was available in five colours, with Passion Red and Canal Blue joining Scotia White, Pyrenean Black and Satellite Silver. This stunning Tommi Makinen is finished in Scotia White with red, black and silver side strips, in addition to Ralliart and Mitsubishi decals on the front bumper and rear wing respectively. As with all TMEs, the interior trim is black and red mesh cloth with ‘T. Makinen Edition’ embroidered on the front Recaro seats. The body coloured white 17-inch Enkei wheels are in very good order, housing the red Brembo brake callipers, wrapped in matching Goodyear tyres to keep it stuck to the ground. Originally a JDM delivered car, this example was imported and UK-registered in 2014 and has been privy to collectors ever since. Having covered a total of 101,000 miles, its condition and usability are remarkable with a new cambelt and alternator recently fitted, a good history file containing the original owner’s book pack, a host of invoices and receipts for maintenance over the years, as well as a selection of old MOTs. With just 2,500 Tommi Makinen Editions built, and certainly a far reduced number still existing, especially in such standard condition, the TME is rightfully sought-after. With the skyrocketing prices of late-90s/early-2000s JDM such as the Nissan’s R34 GT-R, Subaru’s 22B and Mitsubishi’s UK Passion Red Tommi Makinen examples all coasting way above six-figures, the JDM TME is the smart choice. A smartly presented example of the iconic Evo VI complete with a lovely history file.
