32 The Devitt MCN Festival of Motorcycling Sale 2023 Lot 350 1928 Ariel Model E Super Sports 497cc • The new Val Page-designed machines introduced in 1925 consisted of five models, from a Model A side-valve to the range-topping 500cc OHV Super Sports Model E • The Model E was a 497cc, OHV single with a twin-port head and a 3-speed Sturmey Archer gearbox • The bikes were very successful and boosted Ariel’s sales tenfold by 1927 • This restored example was probably assembled in 1927 and first registered in January 1928 • Extensive history folder containing old RF60 logbooks, old V5C, old MOTs, tax discs, numerous receipts, photographs and newspaper articles • A well-known bike within the VMCC and a previous regular on the Banbury Run • Restored to its current condition in the 1990s and well maintained since Val Page-designed, range-topping Model E Super Sports. Registration: OX 4564 Frame No: 5578 Engine No: 4376 Estimate: £8,000 - £10,000 Consignor: Mark Bryan Tel No: 07958 107974 Lot 351 1938 Velocette MOV 249cc • Introduced in 1933 and was an immediate sales success, providing a reliable and lively ride • The Type M Overhead Valve (MOV) was the first high-camshaft engine that Velocette produced and remained in production for almost 40 years • Production ceased during WW2 and was reintroduced briefly in 1946 with Dowty forks replacing the Webb sprung-girders • A total of around 4,500 MOVs were produced overall • Well known to the Velocette Club, this pre-war example is presented in restored condition and described as an “easy starter and good runner” by our vendor • Showing only 68 miles since its restoration.
