32 The Devitt MCN Festival of Motorcycling Sale 2023 Lot 350 1928 Ariel Model E Super Sports 497cc • The new Val Page-designed machines introduced in 1925 consisted of five models, from a Model A side-valve to the range-topping 500cc OHV Super Sports Model E • The Model E was a 497cc, OHV single with a twin-port head and a 3-speed Sturmey Archer gearbox • The bikes were very successful and boosted Ariel’s sales tenfold by 1927 • This restored example was probably assembled in 1927 and first registered in January 1928 • Extensive history folder containing old RF60 logbooks, old V5C, old MOTs, tax discs, numerous receipts, photographs and newspaper articles • A well-known bike within the VMCC and a previous regular on the Banbury Run • Restored to its current condition in the 1990s and well maintained since Val Page-designed, range-topping Model E Super Sports.
