The vision of the then importer Max Hoffman, the little Speedster became an instant hit on the racing circuits due to its light weight and nimble handling. It wasn’t until some years later in 1989 that the Speedster name made a comeback in the form of the 911 Carrera 3.2, with its raked-back aluminium windscreen, 3 inches lower than the standard car and its double hump clamshell fibreglass tonneau cover. In 1994 the Speedster option was available once again, this time on the ‘964’ model 911, which also had upgrades including power-steering, ABS, coil springs on the front suspension, and an electric rear spoiler on the engine cover. Fewer than 1,000 versions of the 964 Speedsters were produced, with only 469 being made for the North American market. We are pleased to offer this particular Porsche 911 (964) Speedster supplied new through Porsche Hinsdale of Illinois on 25th February 1994 to a Mr Tony Morelli. Finished in Guards Red with grey/black ‘RS’ bucket seats other options at the time included; 17” alloy ‘Cup’ wheels, a locking differential (40%), a Porsche CR-1 radio, a luggage compartment lined in velour, a centre-mounted high rear brake light and air-conditioning. The car was then purchased in 2010 by multiple IndyCar Series Champion and Indy 500 winner, Dario Franchitti, who kept it in America whilst he was driving for Chip Ganassi Racing - a team with which he won the Championship three times. After he retired from the Series at the end of the 2013 season, he moved back to the UK and hence this beautiful Speedster made the journey across the pond and was registered with the DVLA to Mr Franchitti’s address in the Home Counties. The condition of this car remains outstanding and contained in the owner’s file is the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, its original marketing brochure, the spare key, its original book pack including the service book and a copy of the original sales invoice. The sticker under the bonnet also remains intact. With just under 1,000 of these 964 Speedsters produced and only 469 cars made for the North American market so, this 5-speed manual car is incredibly rare and is supplied with a UK V5c and an MOT Certificate valid until 2nd July 2020. With its excellent provenance, super condition and just 19,279 miles on the odometer, this is a rare Porsche that is worthy of consideration by any serious Porsche collector.
