Almost immediately, the model gained its ‘Daytona’ moniker in honour of Ferrari’s 1-2-3 result in the 1967 24-hour race of the same name. The Daytona’s engine and handling certainly didn’t undermine its racing associations and with the 4.4-litre, quad-cam V12 producing an astonishing 352bhp it was, in period, the fastest road car in the world. Not only was 175mph more than brisk but, crucially, it was faster than the Miura. The 5-speed gearbox was mounted at the rear for optimal weight distribution and helped give the Daytona its predictable handling and solid road-holding. Delivered new on the 3rd August 1972 through Maranello Concessionaires Ltd, the official Ferrari agent for Great Britain at the time, this car is one of only 158 genuine right-hand drive vehicles supplied and is one of the nicest Daytonas we have seen in recent years. Early registration information identifies famous Ferrari enthusiast and songwriter Mr Elton John, of 14 Abbots Drive, Wentworth, Surrey, as the recorded owner and keeper of the car. We understand that Sir Elton purchased the Daytona in 1973 from the proceeds of his famed album “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” which featured such timeless hits as “Candle in the Wind” and “Saturday’s Alright for Fighting”. Sir Elton famously has a long affinity with Ferrari and this Daytona was amongst his first entries into Ferrari ownership, if not his first, subsequently being stabled next to his 1974 Ferrari 365 Berlinetta Boxer until 1975. Subsequent ownership history is well known and was made up of Ferrari Owners’ Club member-owners. The previous private collector proudly owned the car for 16 years, garaging and maintaining the vehicle regardless of cost. The bodywork is presented in excellent order, the door shuts and panel fit are exceptional and the Rosso Chiaro paintwork still retains a deep shine throughout. The interior was trimmed in 2017 in factory specification Black VM8500 Connolly Vaumol hide complete with the correct Ferrari-supplied punched, holed inserts. A full and complete history file supports this vehicle, with copies of the original build sheets, order forms, delivery correspondence and a chronologically ordered file of every Ferrari service bill and receipt from new. In addition, it is complemented by a complete set of original MOT certificates to support the indicated mileage of some 82,000 miles and has benefitted from a recent service and inspection, refurbishment of the original magnesium wheels and Michelin XWX tyres were fitted in 2017. We had the honour of selling this car in 2017 when it was bought by a young collector, Mr James Harris, who tethered it alongside the other stallions in his collection including his 1974 Ferrari 246 Dino and 1991 Ferrari Testarossa. Sadly Mr Harris passed away this year and we are offering the car on behalf of his family. Competitively guided for the current market we encourage prospective bidders to contact the office for private viewings and welcome any pre-sale inspections of this very special Ferrari. 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona More Images Lot 308 Bid On Lot 308
